Dosage/Direction for Use

500 mg tid or 850 mg bid, in divided doses in combination therapy w/ sulfonylurea or insulin. Max: 3 g daily.

Overdosage

Administration

Should be taken with food.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity. Renal disease. CHF, acute or chronic metabolic acidosis including diabetic ketoacidosis w/ or w/o coma. Patients undergoing radiologic studies (temporarily discontinue).

Special Precautions

Lactic acidosis; DM, significant tissue hypoperfusion & hypoxemia. Monitor renal function throughout therapy. Mild renal impairment.

Anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea; taste disturbances; wt loss; absorption of various substances including vit B₁₂; hypoglycemia; lactic acidosis.

Increased risk of hypoglycaemia w/ other drugs that lower blood glucose conc. Reduced effect w/ drugs that increase blood glucose. Increased risk factor of lactic acidosis w/ alcohol.
